Smokers encouraged to quit through the ‘One you’ campaign

SMOKEFREELIFE Berkshire are bringing their Stoptober Roadshow to Reading Town Centre 7 October to encourage locals to join the 28-day challenge for 2017.

The countdown to Stoptober 2017 has officially begun and the award winning Smokefreelife Berkshire are bringing their roadshow to Reading to encourage people to sign up to the 28-day challenge. This year’s promotion will be based on the national ‘One You’ theme and locally the project will be raising the issue of second hand smoke and how it impacts the health of your pets through ‘Smoke Free Pets’ campaign. The service provides personalised free support for smokers to keep them motivated throughout this period. Their team have successfully supported over 2,500 people to quit smoking in Reading since 2014, and won the Beauty, Healthy & Wellbeing category at this year’s Reading Retail Awards.

The Reading Stoptober Roadshow will take place on Saturday 7 October 2017 in Broad Street, opposite the Oracle entrance and Sainsbury’s. Our stop-smoking advisors will be on hand to offer free advice and support to quit.

Smokefreelife Berkshire are reaching out to the local people of Reading to encourage them to give up the habit for good.

Reading quitter Carol said: “The doctor told me I had mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and with medication it could never be cured, but if I stopped smoking it could be stopped…when I say after 50 years of smoking it is never too late and I have done it.”

The Road Show will be launched by Smokefreelife Berkshire team and aims to reach out to people of Reading and offer free support, free NRT products and professional support in their journey to quit smoking.

The Stoptober campaign is a government initiative to reduce smoking in the UK and was launched in 2012 to motivate the UK’s smokers to stop smoking for 28 days.

Leena Sankla, Director of Public Health and Life Style Services at Solutions4Health said:

“This is the ideal opportunity for you to quit smoking. Did you know that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stop for good. Quitting is one of the best things you will ever do for your health. Stoptober is the biggest stop smoking event of the year! Why not join all the people who have succeeded in becoming smoke free like Carol who quit smoking after 50 years. Come and join this year’s challenge and be a proud quitter for 2017 with our free 12 weeks of support with a professionally qualified Advisor in a clinic near you”.

Councillor Graeme Hoskin, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Health said:

“So many smokers have expressed a desire to quit for good, but for many it is difficult to go it alone. Stopober is the ideal time for those serious about giving up starting their journeys. The support available to those taking part means that smokers who take part are five times more likely to remain smoke free.

There are a number of options available that can help people to start their journey. Finding the right solution can make all the difference.”

Now in its sixth year, Stoptober has proven to be a successful national campaign in motivating people to quit as it creates a sense of solidarity during a difficult period.
