THE DEMOUNTABLE pool at Rivermead will close over two weekends in September for maintenance work.

The pool will close from 10am on Friday 7th September for the weekend, re-opening as normal on Monday 10th September.

The following weekend, the pool will close from 10am on Friday 14th September, re-opening as normal on the morning of Monday 17th September.

The lagoon pool and other facilities at the leisure centre are unaffected.

The closure will allow for relaying part of the vinyl flooring around the swimming pool – work that needs dry conditions for a permanent repair.

The work was identified during a planned building inspection and is being undertaken as part of the original contract, with all costs being met by the developer.

Cllr Graeme Hoskin, Reading’s Lead Member for Sport, said: “Whilst having to close the demountable pool is unfortunate, we wish to ensure any necessary issues are addressed in a timely fashion, to prevent further work being required in the future. We apologise for any inconvenience for pool users. All regular swimming groups and members have been informed.

“The Council is fully committed to delivering modern new sports facilities for Reading. A procurement process started in early April 2018 to identify a single leisure provider to improve and operate all the Council’s indoor leisure facilities across the town. The procurement process is seeking to deliver replacement pools for Central Pool and Arthur Hill. It is hoped that a new leisure operator will be selected in June 2019 and current estimates would see new purpose built swimming facilities open to the public in 2021.”

Notes

The demountable pool opened on 15th January 2018.

The 25 metre, 5 lane pool at Rivermead was designed to provide a continuity of swimming for central Reading whilst the permanent replacement for Central Pool is built.

GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd) – who manage Rivermead Leisure Centre on behalf of the Council – operate the demountable pool to complement existing leisure facilities at Rivermead, including the fitness centre, lagoon pool and sports hall.
