Family Open Day to Celebrate Relaunch of Whitley Learning Centre

AN OPEN day is being held to mark the re-opening of an adult learning centre in Whitley following a £260,000 refurbishment.

The family-friendly event held by New Directions on 16th September will include free workshops, music, community stalls and refreshments.

There will also be a chance for last minute registration to some of the wide range of courses about to start.

The New Directions centre, at Thamesbridge House, in Northumberland Avenue, has benefitted from a new café/drop-in area for students and staff, the creation of a specialist pottery/art space, new office space and replaced flooring.

Visitors to the open day will be able to take part in free workshops in cookery, ceramics and sewing, meet members of the emergency services and browse local community stalls.

There will also be a free barbecue, refreshments, raffle, tombola and a competition to name the centre’s new café.

John Madejski Academy Choir will entertain guests and Reading Borough Mayor Cllr Rose Williams will officially re-open the improved centre.

Courses offered at South Reading include: English, Cookery, Fashion and Dressmaking, Maths, ESOL, Arts and Crafts, Pottery, Health and Lifestyle, Languages and vocational courses.

Councillor Tony Jones, Lead Councillor for Education, said:

“The New Directions Open Day will be a great opportunity for people to visit the newly-refurbished centre and find out more about the fabulous courses on offer there.

“There are a wide range of topics to study at the South Reading centre, including the addition of a specialist pottery and art course, and now the facilities for students are even better.”

The New Directions South Reading Open Day will take place at Thamesbridge House, Northumberland Avenue, between 11am – 3pm, on Saturday 16th September.
