BikeSmart Reading in full swing with Bike Week and the Cycle Challenge

A HOST of events are being run by BikeSmart Reading this week to mark Bike Week and build on the success of the project to date.

The programme of activities kicked off at WaterFest on Saturday and continues throughout the week (which runs from 10th – 18th June) with free bike checks, fun rides and other events to help raise awareness of the benefits of cycling for all parts of the community.

ReadyBike will also be enjoying a double celebration with the scheme’s third birthday during the week.

More than 1,000 people have taken up the BikeSmart Reading scheme and reward tracking app since its launch in April. Many have taken part in cycle training or benefitted from Bike Maintenance to enable them to cycle for more of their journeys

BikeSmart Reading is encouraging further take up with the Bike Week events and also the Reading Cycle Challenge running throughout June, which is about participation not distances covered.

There is still time to join up with work colleagues – it is fun, free and you only need to cycle for 10 minutes to take part.

Councillor Tony Page, Reading’s Lead Member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said:

“I am delighted to celebrate ReadyBike’s 3rd birthday alongside the new BikeSmart Reading scheme.

“We have had an amazing three years since the launch of ReadyBike on 14 June 2014 with over 350,000 miles cycled and many people enjoying the new travel choices the scheme offers for commuting, leisure and shopping trips.

“Switching to cycling is good for the environment by helping to reduce congestion and improve air quality and good for the individual by being more active and benefitting from the enjoyment cycling can bring.

“I wish ReadyBike well as it moves into its fourth year with funding through sponsorship and a new docking station funded by Thames Valley Park Management on the east side of the park to cater for the offices further down the park.”
